SEX

So 8 years ago you could not convince me that Sex and God went together. For me, it was like peanut butter and salad, or like adding chicken to your smoothie. The thought alone weirded me out. The thing is so much has changed since then (mostly internally) and I want to share things I've learnt along the way that have allowed me to embrace and navigate my sexuality (as a single christian woman) without any shame or fear!

Excited?! Me too.

SEX WAS GOD'S IDEA

That truth alone blows my mind. God thought of sex, He created it as a gift to humanity. He also created our bodies...ladies, we have a sexual organ, "the clitoris" for those of you who like specifics, who's only known function is for pleasure! God didn't have to make sex pleasurable it could have just been a dull dutiful thing needed to be done as part of being an adult; like taxes! But no...He designed it to unify, connect, reproduce and bring pleasure within the context of marriage. This completely changed my paradigm. When I realized that God created sex and it was His idea...it made me think who better to learn about sex from!? The boundaries that He put around sex are for my good. This world would love you to think that God is an ancient old idea out of touch with the needs and heart of humanity but it's a lie. God isn't baffled by your sexuality...He created it and because He created it, He can heal and restore it + handle all of your questions and/or frustrations.

ABSTINENCE ISN'T THE GOAL

Abstinence is the act of restraining oneself from something. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines it as the practice of not doing something that is wanted or enjoyable. It's so important to realize that abstinence isn't the goal, it's a means. Sometimes the only message heard from Christians regarding sex is "don't do it because [insert logical reasons like STDs or unwanted pregnancies here]". The thing is having sex is often not a logical decision but an emotional one. Sort, of like eating food, logically it makes sense to eat more greens but driven by emotions you may find yourself reaching for the crème brûlée! Which is why I looooove Jesus, He always addressed the heart. The motivation. The root.

The goal isn't simply for you to abstain from having sex; the goal is for God to have your whole heart

Once, Jesus showed up at a village in Samaria where there was a very scandalous woman who was living with a man that she wasn't married to and this man was numero 6! He met her at the well, and engaged her in conversation (which was a huge faux-pas in that day but Jesus didn't care because He was on mission). You have to remember that sin doesn't drive God away, sin is why He came! He met her in her brokenness and addressed her thirst (literally and figuratively). He explained to her that her source of water would always leave her thirsty but that the water He gives becomes a spring of water welling up to eternal life. Her solutions were temporary; quick fixes but His were long-lasting; eternal. Abstinence like dieting doesn't work. If all your energy and focus is on NOT doing something you end up obsessing over the wrong thing and missing the point entirely. That's why you see all those quotes on instagram talking about 'its not a diet it's a lifestyle'. The focus here is a lifestyle of worship. Bottom line, God wants all of you, and the bible says that our natural disposition is not to want Him back....BUT...He didn't leave us there; He came, He took a risk, He modelled love, He laid His life down, and mapped out a path back to Him. Now we get the choice of choosing Him (which includes His plans and boundaries for us).

There's so much more I can say, but this isn't a book its a blog (HA!). We will definitely revisit this topic, I want to answer a few FAQs  + introduce you to some people who Love God and are SOO HAPPY that they followed God's plan for sex !!

Until next time...

LOVE

  1. Thank you for sharing this post, Sherina. Growing up as a Christian in church, I heard all kind of things saying that sex was bad, a sin, etc.... but you’re completely right! Sex was God idea and in the right context, it is truly amazing. Thanks for being so raw and speaking the truth!
    Love you xoxo
